DEVAGIRI ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
ST. JOSEPH’S COLLEGE DEVAGIRI, CALICUT – 8

Fr. Theodosius Memorial Auditorium Complex

Sir,

Hearty greetings to you from the Devagiri family. The household is extremely proud of the fact that you belong to it. Now that you could scale loftly heights in life, the entire Devagiri joins you in gratitude to the Almighty and rejoices with you as this college has been a means to guide you in life. About 1500 members of the Alumni participated in the ‘Devagirians – 09 Meet’ conducted on February 14, 2009. To the former students of Devagiri College, it was an exciting experience to spend the whole day, in their alma mater, with their teachers. Recalling the sweet, sensational moments of campus life, they nostalgically ruminated over their life at Devagiri. It was in fact a cross section of what the Alumni of Devagiri feel about their alma mater. Based on their response, it was decided to form Devagiri Alumni chapters both in India and abroad. Thus the Alumni of the college get an opportunity to share fascinating reminiscences about their campus life at places where they are. You are cordially invited to mastermind the campaign to form a unit of Devagiri Alumni Association at your place. This probably would be instrumental in developing a deeper attachment to the alma mater and cherishing nostalgic memories of campus life.

The general feeling expressed by the Alumni was that we should have honoured our alma mater, who made us what we are and always stood the sure guarantee of our prosperity, with a structural monument, that will give full expression to our emotional attachment, as other similar associations have done else where. For fulfilling this the Alumni Association has drawn up a project which it places before you, looking forward to your approval, blessings and help to realize it.

The UGC – National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) has awarded ‘A’ grade with 88.15% marks to Devagiri College, which was the highest score in Kerala at that time. The UGC team has given a few guidelines and it is these suggestions for creating a centre for excellence that the Alumni Association has accepted as the project. The team has pointed out that the proximity of the library, auditorium and the basket ball court is not befitting for an educational institution and hence these must be located separately. Moreover, the expansion and improvement of the library is very much a need of the hour. The existing auditorium, therefore may be converted as part of the library. That necessitates the construction of a new auditorium – cum – examination hall. The Alumni Association has assessed the situation and offered its help to build a new auditorium, located a little away so that the silence and stillness of the library is not disturbed. Often, during times of examination, regular classes are suspended to accommodate the large number of examinees. A new auditorium cum examination hall will be an apt solution to these problems. The Alumni Association, being fully alive to the exigency of the situation proposes to embark on the construction of a new auditorium cum examination hall. The plan and estimate of the hall plus a number of smart classrooms, guestrooms and amphitheatre complex of Rs.7 crores have been prepared. In the first phase we plan to construct the auditorium cum examination hall with the estimate of Rs.3 crores this year itself. We hope that this will engender in the members a feeling of concrete and meaningful participation in the achievement of the alma mater. If the Alumni of Devagiri whole-heartedly support the project, the fund-raising is quite easy. The fact that over 50 years not even a memorial has been erected in the name of the Devagiri Alumni Association, should stimulate us in implementing the project. To honour the founder principal the project is named ‘Fr. Theodosius Memorial Auditorium Complex’. All the details about the scheme, online registration facility for membership etc. are given in the alumni web site. Looking forward to your valuable suggestions, cooperation and an early reply. With warm regards from Devagiri.
